Course Report

Bobby Weed, a protégé of Pete Dye, began his design career at Long Cove in 1981 and returned in 2018 to lead a celebrated renovation that restored many original Dye features.

About

Long Cove Club is a celebrated Pete Dye design on Hilton Head Island, offering a pure Lowcountry golf experience across 7,094 yards among centuries-old live oaks and saltwater marshes. Known for its strategic layout and beautiful scenery, this private 18-hole course is acclaimed for both challenge and hospitality, and was renovated in 2018 by Bobby Weed.

Caddie Tip

Reading Pete Dye’s greens can be especially challenging due to subtle breaks and deceptive slopes—take your time and trust your read. Many holes reward a conservative strategy off the tee, especially on the signature 3rd, where staying left and avoiding the marsh saves strokes.

The Main Challenge

Long Cove’s toughest challenge lies in its approach shots and putting. Subtle green complexes, penal bunkering, and ever-present marsh hazards demand precise shotmaking. The course is especially demanding in the wind, with several holes featuring forced carries and menacing water hazards that will test every part of your game.

The Good

Golfers most appreciate Long Cove Club’s masterful Pete Dye design, combining strategic play with natural Lowcountry beauty. The challenge, immaculate Bermuda greens, and consistently friendly service have made it one of Hilton Head’s best-rated and most beloved private experiences. Members also rave about the vibrant club culture and stunning practice facilities.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note that tee time availability can be limited during busy months. The course’s difficulty may also be intimidating for higher-handicap or casual players, particularly on windy days. Occasional marshy conditions after heavy rain can affect a few fairways, but maintenance is typically proactive.

Signature Hole:

#

3

The par-5 3rd hole, stretching 527 yards from the blue tees, doglegs gently around a marsh hazard that runs its entire length. Strategy and precision are rewarded as the fairway bends left, culminating in a dramatic green with challenging undulations and penalizing surrounds. This hole is widely recognized as one of the region’s best par-5s.
