Course Report

Herds of wild goats frequently roam the course, moving from hole to hole, adding a unique Hawaiian twist to the round.

About

The Mauna Lani North Course, crafted by Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright, is celebrated for its championship layout winding through ancient lava fields on Hawaii's Kohala Coast. Known for striking Kiawe forests, archaeological sites, and Pacific vistas, the course mixes natural beauty with challenging strategic play and hosts major amateur and collegiate events.

Caddie Tip

Plan your approach shots to avoid the dense Kiawe trees and lava rock outcroppings. Take an extra club on the signature 17th if the wind is up, and be mindful of firm, undulating greens that demand careful placement for manageable putts.

The Main Challenge

The toughest obstacle is managing shots over and around rugged lava formations and through stands of native Kiawe trees. Several holes feature narrow fairways with subtle elevation changes, demanding accuracy off the tee and creative approaches to well-defended greens.

The Good

Golfers rave about the stunning natural setting, particularly the contrast of emerald fairways against ancient black lava flows and ocean views. The memorable blend of challenging holes and the peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere make it a top Hawaiian experience.

The Not So Good

Some players note the greens can get firm and quick in dry conditions, making it tough to hold approach shots. Others would like a wider selection of on-course food and beverage options, especially for midday rounds.
