Course Report

Oitavos Dunes is the first golf course in Europe and second in the world to achieve Gold Signature Sanctuary status from Audubon International, recognizing its environmental stewardship.

About

Oitavos Dunes, designed by Arthur Hills, lies within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, blending pines, sandy dunes, and open coastal holes. Its links-style layout is renowned for integrating with the surrounding environment and offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sintra Mountains.

Caddie Tip

Wind is often a major factor on many holes, especially near the ocean—club up on open, exposed holes and favor placing tee shots short of trouble to avoid tricky recoveries from sandy waste areas and pine scrub. Always check for shifting gusts before approach shots.

The Main Challenge

The open coastal holes pose the most significant challenge, as Atlantic winds often demand creative shotmaking and precise club selection. Firm fescue fairways, sandy waste areas, and undulating greens add layers of difficulty, particularly on the long par 4s exposed to the elements.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise Oitavos Dunes for its breathtaking ocean vistas, links-style design, and the sense of tranquility from its natural setting. The routing provides a unique mixture of dune, pine, and open coastal holes, with minimal residential development to interfere with the playing experience.

The Not So Good

Some golfers feel certain fairways and greens can become quite firm and fast, potentially leading to challenging bounces and rolls. Occasional windy conditions can amplify the difficulty, and pace of play may lag during busy periods. The eco-focus limits extensive manicuring, leading to natural roughs.

Signature Hole:

It's famed for its scenic beauty and coastal challenge, making accuracy and club selection critical in the exposed environment.
