Course Report

Old Warson became the first golf course in the nation recognized as a bird sanctuary by the National Audubon Society and famously hosted the 1971 Ryder Cup.

About

Old Warson Country Club, established in 1954 in St. Louis and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., is noted for its classic, undulating parkland layout and elite private membership. The course features tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkering, and challenging greens. It has hosted high-profile tournaments, including the 1971 Ryder Cup, earning it a place among Missouri’s most respected clubs.

Caddie Tip

The often-deceptive greens require careful study and soft hands, especially on approaches. Strategic placement off the tee is vital, as tree-lined fairways and deep bunkers punish wayward shots. Don’t underestimate elevation changes and always account for subtle breaks on your putts.

The Main Challenge

The true challenge at Old Warson lies in its undulating, narrow fairways, deep bunkers, and some of the fastest, most challenging greens in the Midwest. Long par 4s require exceptional shot control, and several holes bring water, elevation shifts, and tightly bunkered approaches into play.

The Good

Members love Old Warson’s exceptional routing and dramatic elevation changes, which produce a challenging yet fair test befitting a championship pedigree. The ambiance and natural tranquility—supported by mature trees and a preserved bird sanctuary—give every round a sense of history and exclusivity.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note that the demanding greens can be frustrating for high-handicappers, and challenging rough in the summer can lead to slow play. As an older classic course, cart path conditions and drainage areas sometimes show wear after heavy rain.

Signature Hole:

#

14

No items found.

The par 4 14th hole is famed for its drama: an elevated back tee requires a bold carry of over 200 yards across a lake to an intimidatingly narrow landing area. Water guards the left, and fairway bunkers threaten both sides. The long, sloping green is protected by three bunkers, demanding precision on approach.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features fine dining, casual grill, private meeting rooms, well-appointed locker rooms, and event spaces overlooking the course. Excellence in service and exclusivity are central, including valet, attentive staff, and tailored member events.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Expect an expansive driving range, target greens, well-kept short game area, bunkers, and a large putting green. Staff provide lessons for all ages and skill levels. Facilities are geared toward private members and maintained to a high standard.
