Course Report
The Fazio Course at Pronghorn features the only golf hole in the world built into a 45,000-year-old exposed lava tube, making it truly unique in global golf.
About
Pronghorn's Fazio Course, designed by Tom Fazio in 2006, weaves seamlessly through the high desert landscape of Bend, Oregon. Known for its pristine conditions, dramatic bunkering, and stunning integration of natural rock and lava formations, the course offers sweeping views of juniper forests and the Cascade Mountains. It is regarded as one of Oregon’s most exclusive and memorable golf experiences.
Caddie Tip
Distance control is vital on the Fazio Course, especially on approaches, with fast, undulating greens and many holes framed by natural rock outcrops. Play conservatively on the par 3s, as trouble awaits long and left. The bentgrass greens roll pure but fast—keep approach shots below the hole when possible.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge is the relentless precision demanded from tee to green, with tight landing areas, deep bunkering, tricky desert winds, and super-fast, undulating greens. Misses are punished by lava rock outcroppings, thick native rough, or deep collection areas. Recovery is never guaranteed, rewarding shot-making and smart strategy.
The Good
Golfers rave about the Fazio Course’s immaculate conditioning and dramatic setting, with each hole carved thoughtfully into the high desert. The course constantly surprises with memorable vistas and creative use of lava rock, elevation, and bunkers, offering an exceptionally scenic and peaceful high-end golf experience.
The Not So Good
Some players find the exclusivity and high green fees restrictive, limiting access to all but the most connected guests or resort stayers. While conditions are generally excellent, the desert climate can occasionally challenge turf health late in the season or after harsh winters.
Signature Hole:
#
8
The 8th hole, a par 3, is a world-renowned showpiece carved out of lava tubes. The tee shot carries over a natural canyon framed by ancient lava rock to a green benched dramatically into the desert. Its beauty and challenge create one of the most memorable par 3s in American golf.
Clubhouse
Golfers can expect a modern, luxurious clubhouse with full-service locker rooms, upscale dining, patio seating overlooking the course, well-stocked pro shop, and personalized service throughout. Spa, fitness, and resort amenities are available to members and registered guests.
Practice Facilities
The Fazio side sports an expansive double-sided driving range, a massive short game area with targets up to 100 yards, and a large, perfectly conditioned putting green. Facilities are among the best in Oregon, suitable for both leisure warm-ups and serious practice.
