Course Report

Pronghorn’s Nicklaus Course is Oregon’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature design and was the first 'desert-style' course in the Northwest, blending ancient lava flows and juniper forest for a truly unique golf environment.

About

Pronghorn's Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in Bend, Oregon, is renowned as the original high desert 'desert-style' golf experience in the Northwest. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2004, it challenges players of all levels across dramatic lava outcroppings, ancient junipers, and spectacular Cascade Mountain scenery. Exceptional strategy, playability, and stunning natural integration define this iconic resort course.

Caddie Tip

Focus on accuracy, especially off the tee—many fairways are lined with natural high desert vegetation and lava outcrops. The greens are true but can be deceptively quick; take time to study undulations before putting. Always favor the safe side of the greens on approach shots to avoid deep collection areas.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge is Pronghorn’s routing through natural lava fields and arid, windswept terrain. Small landing areas place a premium on accuracy from the tee, while elevated and contoured greens demand sharp short game skills. Sudden wind and firm turf conditions can quickly elevate difficulty, rewarding precise ball striking and course management.

The Good

Golfers love the course’s memorable setting amid ancient lava flows, high-desert juniper forests, and the inspiring views of the Cascade Mountains. Jack Nicklaus’s design offers brilliant shot value and multiple tee options that balance challenge and playability. The integration of natural features provides a visually stunning and strategic golf experience.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for more forgiveness off the tee, as the desert-style landscape with native vegetation and lava can be penalizing to errant shots. Feedback also occasionally notes that pace of play can slow during peak resort seasons. Greater consistency with fairway and bunker maintenance would further increase overall satisfaction.
