Course Report

Purgatory Golf Club is one of the longest golf courses east of the Mississippi, stretching to over 7,700 yards from the back tees. Its signature 'Hell’s Half Acre' bunkers make it famous among Midwest courses.

About

Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana is a Ron Kern-designed 18-hole public course, renowned for its links-style layout and vast white-sand bunkers. Opened in 2000, it boasts bentgrass greens and fairways, challenging fescue mounds, and over 7,700 yards from the back tees, making it one of the longest and most unique courses in the region.

Caddie Tip

Bring plenty of golf balls and be conservative on club choices off the tee—many holes have severe fescue and deep bunkers that punish errant shots. Pay close attention to wind and distance on the par 3s, especially the famous 17th.

The Main Challenge

The course’s primary challenge is its combination of length, deep white-sand bunkers—over 125 in total—and tall fescue rough lining the fairways. Strategic shot placement is a must, and windy conditions add another layer of complexity, particularly on the exposed back nine.

The Good

Golfers love the memorable shot values and strategic challenge of Purgatory’s deep bunkering and windswept fairways. The 17th hole’s sea of white sand and the vast, open links layout make for an inspiring and distinctive round, favored for both team tournaments and group outings.

The Not So Good

Some golfers report slower pace of play on crowded weekends due to course difficulty and length. The dense fescue rough and dramatic bunkers, while iconic, can lead to lost balls and higher scores that sometimes hamper enjoyment for higher handicappers.
