Course Report
The club occupies 185 acres just outside Portland and maintains a classic New England private club atmosphere with a history stretching back more than a century.
About
Purpoodock Club, established in 1922 in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, is a private 18-hole course designed by George F. Sargent, later updated by Larry Rowe and Geoffrey Cornish. Known for its walkable layout, bentgrass fairways and greens, and rich club tradition, it provides an enjoyable and challenging parkland experience for players of all skill levels.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively off the tee, as tight fairways and strategic bunkering demand control over length. Take note of subtle breaks on the pure bentgrass greens and err on the safe side to avoid the thick rough. The course rewards accuracy and smart club selection throughout, especially on approaches to firm, fast greens.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge lies in the course’s mature trees, demanding accuracy off the tee, and in the small, undulating bentgrass greens, which punish poor approach shots. Numerous strategically placed bunkers and subtle doglegs call for smart decision-making, particularly late in the round.
The Good
Members highlight the course's walkability, friendly staff, and the rich heritage of a true New England private club. The variety in hole design, well-conditioned bentgrass surfaces, and a peaceful, parkland setting foster a relaxing yet stimulating round for all skill levels.
The Not So Good
Golfers occasionally wish for updated bunkers and some improved drainage in lower-lying areas after heavy rain. Some members have requested additional tee boxes to better accommodate beginners and seniors, as well as enhanced on-course signage for visitors.
