Course Report

Rockwind Community Links was built on the site of the former Ocotillo Park Golf Course and features a routing inspired by Muirfield, making it unique among American municipals.

About

Opened in 2015 and designed by Andy Staples, Rockwind Community Links in Hobbs, New Mexico, is an award-winning public facility with an 18-hole championship course inspired by the Scottish Muirfield routing. It features a 9-hole par-3 course, extensive practice areas, and scenic native desert surrounds, making it a standout municipal destination.

Caddie Tip

Wind is a constant factor at Rockwind, with many holes exposed to the open prairie. Pay close attention to direction and adjust club selection accordingly, especially on the perimeter 'outer loop' holes. On the back nine, take advantage of the shared turf for creative recovery shots if you stray offline.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect of Rockwind's layout is the shifting prairie wind, which tests shot control and club selection throughout the round. Several holes on the perimeter loop expose golfers to open conditions, while water hazards and native grass areas demand precision, especially coming home on the final stretch.

The Good

Golfers rave about the imaginative routing that incorporates both outer and inner loops, allowing varied experience of Hobbs' prairie landscape and unique community-focused amenities. The facility's practice areas and the 9-hole par-3 course are praised for their accessibility, welcoming local golfers and visitors of all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Some golfers mention that although the greens usually roll well, seasonal transitions can make conditions inconsistent, especially on rough and tee boxes. Wind can significantly affect playability, and pace of play can slow during busy tournament or outing days.
