Course Report

Sand Creek Station's 16th hole features a recreated Road Hole green, and the course has also hosted a USGA championship (the final US Amateur Public Links in 2014).

About

Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas is a Jeff Brauer design opened in 2006. The course pays tribute to both railway history and classic golf architecture, featuring replicas of famous greens like the Road Hole and Redan. With a blend of challenging holes, open prairie winds, and diverse routing, it is routinely ranked among Kansas's best public courses.

Caddie Tip

Plan for steady wind, as the prairie layout is exposed on many holes and club selection is critical. Aim to keep your ball below the wind on approach shots, particularly on the long par 4s. Take extra care with pin placements—the large, contoured greens require thoughtful lag putting and strategic play.

The Main Challenge

The stiffest challenge is managing the consistently breezy conditions, which make club selection and trajectory vital on every shot. Penal rough, frequent bunkers, and sloped greens demand precision. The longer par 4s and the lengthy par 5 tenth require both length and accuracy—especially when playing into the prevailing south wind.

The Good

Golfers rave about the course’s creative layout, with several homage holes to classics like the Road Hole and Redan. The conditioning is excellent for a public facility, and the wind-swept prairie character delivers a memorable, strategic test. Staff hospitality and the overall value also consistently earn high marks.

The Not So Good

Some players note the wind can exponentially increase difficulty, and a few feel the back nine’s residential surroundings detract from the otherwise natural setting. Slow weekend play can occur during peak periods, and bunkers occasionally need raking after rain due to their size and positioning.
