Course Report

Secession is one of the only true walking-only, caddie-mandatory private golf clubs in America, with no golf carts allowed and no residences anywhere on the property.

About

Secession Golf Club, designed by Bruce Devlin, is a caddie-only, walking-only private club set amid South Carolina's Lowcountry marshes. The links-inspired course emphasizes wind, strategic shotmaking, and an unspoiled natural setting with no housing. Fourteen holes border the tidal marsh, delivering challenge and beauty along with pure, uninterrupted golf.

Caddie Tip

Trust your caddie for local wind reads, especially on marsh-edge holes. Focus on club selection, as winds can shift round to round. On the 18th, aim safely right off the tee unless you’re confident attacking the marsh carry. Approach shots should factor the firm, sloping greens, which often require running shots.

The Main Challenge

The course’s greatest challenge comes from unpredictable coastal winds and the close proximity of marsh on most holes. Club selection and trajectory control are vital, especially on holes exposed to the water. The 18th demands accuracy and nerve, with significant water off the tee and around the green.

The Good

Most golfers love Secession’s pure focus on golf and its stunning Lowcountry setting. The absence of housing, noise, or distractions and the prominent use of caddies create a peaceful, traditional golf experience with breathtaking marsh views and an ever-changing strategic challenge from the wind.

The Not So Good

Because the course is walking-only and relies exclusively on caddies, some members express a desire for more flexibility for aging or mobility-restricted players. Wet conditions after heavy rains can occasionally affect playability in low-lying areas, and seasonal insects can be an annoyance around marsh holes.

Signature Hole:

#

18

No items found.

The 18th (par 4, 425 yards) finishes dramatically with a 225–240 yard carry over marsh to a broad landing area. A demanding approach follows, avoiding deep pot bunkers, to a large green that merges with the practice green and slopes from back to front. Par here is an excellent finish to this challenging links test.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse offers classic Lowcountry hospitality with dining, a bar, and comfortable sitting areas. Dormitory-style rooms and cottage accommodations serve overnight guests. Locker rooms are spacious but informal, in keeping with the club’s relaxed, traditional approach.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Secession offers a well-maintained practice range, short game area, and a large putting green directly connected to the course’s finishing hole. Warm-ups are complemented by caddie support, and the facilities are designed for quick pre-round preparation rather than extensive practice.
