Course Report
Each hole at Tatanka Golf Club is named and themed after stories from the Santee Sioux culture, giving the layout a distinct identity rooted in local heritage.
About
Tatanka Golf Club, designed by Paul Albanese in 2015, offers 18 holes stretching across rolling hills in northeast Nebraska. Known for its beautiful vistas, lush fairways, and excellent greens, each hole draws from the stories of the Santee Sioux culture. Located near the Ohiya Casino Resort, the course welcomes visiting golfers seeking a memorable Midwest golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Conservative strategy off the tee pays dividends, as native rough and elevation changes make aggressive play risky. Pay close attention to changing winds, especially on exposed holes. Approach shots tend to run out, so favor running the ball into greens whenever possible. Consider altitude when gauging yardages for second shots.
The Main Challenge
Tatanka’s greatest test comes from its exposed layout, where prevalent winds and elevation changes force careful club selection and shot-shaping. Native tall grasses border several fairways, exacting a penalty for misses, while multi-tiered greens challenge putting from every angle. Strategic decision-making is key across the back nine.
The Good
The rolling prairie vistas and cleverly routed holes receive frequent praise. Golfers love the tranquil setting, the lush fairways, and the cultural story elements at each tee. The course’s design incorporates natural elevation changes and native grasses, making each hole visually distinct and inviting for repeat play.
The Not So Good
Some players have noted that conditions can be affected during periods of maintenance, particularly if greens are being aerated, and that food and beverage options at the nearby resort can be limited, especially at off-peak times. Additional signage and improved pace of play would elevate the overall experience.
Signature Hole:
#
8
The par 3 8th at Tatanka Golf Club features an elevated tee shot over native grassland to a green framed by natural bunkering and stunning prairie views. The visual intimidation of the carry, combined with swirling winds, makes club selection crucial, and accuracy is rewarded. It’s a memorable highlight reflecting the course’s rolling Nebraska setting.
Clubhouse
Connected to Ohiya Casino Resort, the clubhouse provides locker rooms, food and beverage service, and a welcoming lounge. While amenities may be modest compared to top resorts, players appreciate access to the casino, as well as on-site lodging and event space.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a quality practice range and short-game area. Practice greens replicate course green speed and undulation. Equipment rentals and a pro shop with basic merchandise are onsite, making warm-up convenient for golfers.
