Course Report
The Coal Creek course is often called the 'crown jewel' of courses owned by retired Microsoft billionaire Oki, and its elevated location offers some of the most dramatic panoramic views in the Pacific Northwest.
About
Coal Creek, designed by Bob Cupp and Fred Couples, sits atop 350 acres of hilltop overlooking Seattle and features dramatic elevation changes, strong strategic bunkering, and panoramic views of the city skyline, Lake Washington, and surrounding mountains. The championship course is known for its carefully crafted holes and stunning setting, creating a memorable experience for golfers of every level.
Caddie Tip
Club selection is critical on downhill approach shots and par 3s, especially given frequent swirling winds. Take enough club to clear deep ravines on signature holes. Fairways are generous, but approaches require precision; aim for the center of greens to avoid short-sided misses, and stay below the hole on fast, sloped surfaces.
The Main Challenge
The biggest challenge is handling the elevation changes and sloped lies throughout the course. Many holes force forced carries over ravines and bunkers, especially on approach shots, while the sloping and fast greens reward careful placement. The difficulty is elevated in windy or rainy Pacific Northwest weather.
The Good
Golfers rave about the breathtaking scenery, especially the panoramic views of Seattle, Lake Washington, and both the Cascade and Olympic Mountains from high-elevation holes. The dramatic elevation changes and creative routing make each hole visually striking and memorable, and the clubhouse facilities are regarded as some of the finest in the region.
The Not So Good
Some players feel the hilly terrain and frequent slopes can lead to uncomfortable lies and tired legs, making the course physically demanding and occasionally reducing playability for higher handicaps. Busy weekend times can push pace of play long, and prices are among the highest public options in the Seattle area.
Signature Hole:
#
17
The par 3 17th hole is perched on the edge of the hilltop with spectacular views of downtown Seattle and Mount Rainier. Players must carry a deep ravine to a generous green guarded by bunkers, making both distance control and trajectory paramount. The dramatic elevation drop and scenic backdrop make this one of the most memorable par 3s in the region.
Clubhouse
The 44,000 square foot clubhouse includes upscale locker rooms, a full-service restaurant and bar, banquet/wedding venues with 180-degree views, golf shop, and terraces overlooking finishing holes. Service is attentive, and the interior features Pacific Northwest timber and stone design elements.
Practice Facilities
Expect a full driving range with numerous hitting bays, extensive short game area with chipping and putting greens, and bunkers. Well-kept practice balls and close proximity to the main clubhouse make warm-ups convenient and comfortable for all guests.
