Course Report

The Snead Course is named after golf legend Sam Snead, who began his pro career at The Greenbrier and went on to become one of America’s winningest golfers, setting a PGA Tour record with 82 victories.

About

The Snead Course at The Greenbrier Sporting Club is a Tom Fazio design opened in 2004, exclusive to club members. Set within the rolling meadows of the resort, the par-71 layout stretches over 7,025 yards and honors Sam Snead, the legendary PGA champion who began his career at The Greenbrier. The routing uses the former airstrip site to offer a blend of variety, challenge, and strategic risk-reward opportunities amidst beautiful mountain views.

Caddie Tip

Favor accuracy over distance, as the Tom Fazio layout rewards thoughtful play. On the par 3s, be especially mindful of swirling mountain winds and subtle slopes that make club selection tricky. A conservative approach off the tee often offers the best angle into these receptive, yet well-guarded, greens.

The Main Challenge

Strategically placed bunkers and water hazards, combined with variable wind conditions and well-contoured greens, demand precision on approach shots. The closing stretch, from holes 16–18, provides a stern test with narrow fairways and subtle elevation changes, requiring consistent ball-striking and smart course management.

The Good

Golfers praise the exceptional routing and conditioning, highlighting pristine fairways and receptive, fast greens. The overall tranquility and privacy of the club, along with picturesque Appalachian views and superb service, create a relaxing and upscale experience reminiscent of classic private retreats.

The Not So Good

Some players wish for more creative risk-reward holes and greater variety over the back nine. Access is also highly exclusive, which may limit opportunities for outside guests and regional exposure. A few members note occasional slow greens after rain as a minor concern, but maintenance is generally very strong.
