Course Report
The Old White is among the few courses in the world to finish with a par 3, and it hosted the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic from 2010–2019.
About
The Old White at The Greenbrier, designed by C.B. Macdonald and opened in 1913, is a classic parkland course renowned for strategic design, tight, tree-lined fairways, and undulating greens. It’s an iconic American resort layout, updated by Lester George in 2006 and celebrated for blending historical architecture with challenging play amid the Allegheny Mountains.
Caddie Tip
Stay below the hole on most greens—many have severe back-to-front slopes and chipping or putting downhill can leave you with very challenging recoveries. On the par 3s, club selection is crucial due to swirling mountain winds; trust your yardage and don’t be short on 18.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge is the tight, tree-lined corridors that demand accurate drives, especially on the long, strategic par 4s. Firm, sloping greens grant little margin for error on approaches, and the risk-reward nature of several holes can penalize aggressive play. Finishing on a par 3 adds unique pressure.
The Good
Golfers rave about the Old White’s strategic layout: template holes modeled after classic Scottish and English courses, exceptional variety, and the dramatic, memorable experience of finishing at the 18th. The course’s history and premium mountain setting add to the enduring appeal and sense of occasion.
The Not So Good
Some guests have noted slower greens after aeration and the challenge of dealing with crowded pace of play during peak resort periods. Summer humidity and a tight booking window for prime morning tee times can also detract from the experience for those seeking a quieter, more relaxed round.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole at The Old White is a par 3 finishing hole, a rarity in American golf. With water wrapping around the front and side and a long narrow green guarded by bunkers, it provides a dramatic, demanding conclusion that has decided many PGA Tour outcomes and remains unforgettable for guests and professionals alike.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features spacious locker rooms, resort shopping, fine and casual dining, and lounges. Service is attentive, and the historic setting pays tribute to Greenbrier’s status as a National Historic Landmark with golf memorabilia throughout.
Practice Facilities
Practice amenities include a full driving range, dedicated short game area with bunkers, and greens maintained to match course speeds. The Greenbrier Golf Academy offers extensive instruction, and guests can expect lockers, club storage, and bag drop services.
