Course Report

The Pete Dye Course at French Lick was sketched by the renowned designer on a napkin before becoming reality and has hosted major events including the 2015 Senior PGA Championship.

About

The Pete Dye Course at French Lick is a dramatic championship design set atop southern Indiana’s highest point. Opened in 2009 and crafted by the legendary Pete Dye, the course stretches over 8,100 yards with rugged terrain, bold bunkering, and panoramic 40-mile views. The layout is lauded for its strategic challenge, memorable routing, and postcard-worthy vistas.

Caddie Tip

Play conservative off the tee and respect the wind—elevation exaggerates even small misses. Many greens are perched and well-guarded, so favor the fat side of the fairway and approach. Aim for the center of the massive greens to avoid tricky collection areas and deep bunkers, and never underestimate the putts on these speedy surfaces.

The Main Challenge

The most daunting aspects are the frequent elevation changes, slick tiered greens, and strategically placed deep bunkers. Narrow, sloping fairways demand pinpoint accuracy, and brutal wind on the open hilltop can make club selection unpredictable and challenging throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers rave about the extraordinary panoramic views—up to 40 miles from many vantage points—as well as the championship shot values and creative, strategic holes. The world-class design offers memorable risk-reward options, making it a true bucket-list experience for avid players.

The Not So Good

Some guests find the extreme elevation changes and forced carries overwhelming, which can penalize higher handicap players more than most championship courses. Additionally, unpredictable winds at the hilltop and the difficulty in walking the course (carts are required for most guests) sometimes detract from enjoyment for traditionalists.
