Course Report
The Ranch Club offers the only driving range in the valley with two separate directions, as well as three dedicated target greens for short game improvement.
About
The Ranch Club in Missoula, designed by Les Furber, is a links-style course featuring rolling hills, mountain views, and contemporary amenities. It stands out for its strong layout, playable for all skill levels, and modern practice facilities. The club is private, with top-tier amenities including pools, fitness, and extensive dining options, catering to golf and family life.
Caddie Tip
Take advantage of the open, links-style fairways by keeping approach shots below the wind, especially on holes exposed to the valley breezes. Ensure careful club selection on par 3s due to subtle elevation changes. The large greens are quick and may require more break than expected. Position tee shots for an ideal angle of approach on the par 5s.
The Main Challenge
The layout’s greatest challenge comes from strategically placed bunkers and water hazards that demand thoughtful planning, particularly around the greens. Wind can play a factor due to the open, valley setting. Subtle changes in elevation and large, quick greens test approach shots and putting from all angles, especially during tournament conditions.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise The Ranch Club for its panoramic mountain views and the tranquil links-style setting just minutes from Missoula. The course’s layout, with broad fairways and fast greens, offers enjoyment and challenge for all levels. The modern clubhouse, family-friendly atmosphere, and welcoming staff are also frequently highlighted as standout features.
The Not So Good
Some golfers note that pace of play can be affected by groups with varying skill levels, especially during member events. Others wish for more flexibility in tee access for non-members or guests and mention that the links-style design can be challenging during windy days. Drainage after heavy rain can be inconsistent in spots.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole at The Ranch Club is a par 5 that finishes near the clubhouse with panoramic mountain views. Tee shots must avoid fairway bunkers, and the approach requires navigating water and a generous green. Risk-reward options abound for the second shot, making for a memorable finishing experience for players of all levels.
Clubhouse
The Ranch Club clubhouse includes fine dining, a casual lounge, 15,000-sq ft resort pool complex, fitness center, meeting rooms, and dedicated family spaces. Seasonal activities include a robust social calendar—family barbecues, wine dinners, XC skiing, and curling. Pro shop and locker facilities are comprehensive and modern.
Practice Facilities
The Ranch Club features a full-length, two-direction driving range, three specialized short-game target greens, and an extensive putting green. Golf instruction and camps are available for all ages.
