Course Report

The Rookery South incorporates 14 acres of ponds and is adjacent to wetlands, giving it varied wildlife and a natural setting reminiscent of classic coastal courses.

About

The Rookery South, designed by Pete Oakley and Chris Adkins, is a public 18-hole golf course located near Milton, Delaware. Opened in 2000, the course features bentgrass greens, tees, and fairways and offers a mix of parkland and links-style elements with crowned greens and numerous water hazards. Renowned for its playability and well-maintained conditions, it appeals to golfers of all abilities.

Caddie Tip

Watch for prevailing winds near the open wetlands and elevated greens. Stay below the hole on crowned greens as they can be tricky and repel approach shots. Many of the fairways are forgiving, but water hazards and subtle elevation changes can challenge your club selection and course management.

The Main Challenge

Water hazards, including ponds and adjacent wetlands, come into play on multiple holes, demanding accuracy and thoughtful course management. Elevated crowned greens can cause approach shots to run off, making short game precision essential throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers love the mix of links-inspired features, such as elevated crowned greens and strategic water hazards, combined with parkland-style routing. The course is recognized for its excellent maintenance, friendly staff, and a layout that is enjoyable for both casual and competitive golfers. Its proximity to Delaware beaches adds to its local appeal.

The Not So Good

Some players note the lack of sufficient yardage markers on tees and course fairways, making distance calculation challenging for those without GPS or rangefinders. During peak periods, rounds can become lengthy, and the risk of slow play is higher, especially on weekends and holidays.
