Course Report

Valle del Sol was the first fully public championship golf course developed in the San José area, opening access to golfers without the need for private club membership.

About

Valle del Sol Golf Club, designed by Tracy D. May, is an 18-hole championship course located in Santa Ana, San José. Opened in 1997, the course stretches over 60 hectares and offers scenic mountain vistas, water features on most holes, and challenging greens. Its parkland layout provides a modern golfing experience with excellent year-round conditions, making it a standout public option in Costa Rica.

Caddie Tip

Select club carefully when approaching greens exposed to wind, especially on back-nine holes. Water hazards are in play on most holes—play conservatively if unsure. The finishing stretch, particularly 17 and 18, rewards precision over power.

The Main Challenge

The course’s biggest challenge is negotiating its numerous water hazards and managing the wind that sweeps across open areas. Accurate drives and disciplined course management are crucial. The longer holes, especially from the championship tees, can be especially punishing if shots stray offline.

The Good

Most visiting golfers praise Valle del Sol for its striking views of Costa Rica’s volcanic peaks, the lush landscaping, and the abundance of water features that create both beauty and challenge. The course remains well-conditioned year-round, and the friendly staff make for an inviting experience.

The Not So Good

Some golfers mention that course routing can be confusing for first-time visitors, especially moving between certain holes. Pace of play can slow during weekend peak hours, and the prevalence of water hazards can be punishing for high handicappers.

Signature Hole:

#

18

No items found.

The par 5 18th hole is renowned for its dramatic finish, featuring a 600+ yard layout from the tips and a significant drive over water from the black tees. The entire right side is guarded by water, with out-of-bounds left, and a sloping fairway that challenges the approach. Strategic shot placement is essential for a satisfying final score.

Clubhouse

Amenities include a modern clubhouse with locker rooms, a bar and grill with terrace seating, golf shop, and event space. The clubhouse is known for providing comfortable resting areas and good views of surrounding holes.
