Course Report

Vestmannaeyjar’s golf course is set inside an old volcanic crater and was covered in volcanic ash after the 1973 eruption, requiring years of restoration and shaping by hand.

About

Vestmannaeyjar Golf Club is the third oldest in Iceland, dating back to 1938. It was designed by Hannes Thorsteinsson with the back nine built in the 1990s. This spectacular 18-hole par 70 layout winds through a volcanic crater and seaside cliffs, offering breathtaking views and unique holes sculpted by nature.

Caddie Tip

Local knowledge is key: Play for the center on blind approach shots as swirling winds can dramatically shift ball flight. On the signature 17th, trust your yardage and club up for the headwind from the ocean. Bunkers are deep, so avoid missing greens short.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge is managing the relentless ocean wind and navigating narrow fairways along the crater’s edge. Strategic club selection is essential, especially on long par 4s with dramatic elevation changes and blind tee shots. Missed shots can quickly result in lost balls or tough lies.

The Good

Golfers rave about the breathtaking natural setting, as the routing offers constant views of the crater, cliffs, and ocean on nearly every hole. Each round feels like an adventure, with unpredictable wind and ever-changing light making the experience unforgettable for visitors.

The Not So Good

Clubhouse amenities and practice facilities are dated and could be refreshed for international standards. Some fairways near the ocean are uneven, and players often mention the challenge of finding shelter from the frequent strong wind, which can make rounds unpredictable.

Signature Hole:

#

17

No items found.

The 17th is a dramatic par 3 requiring a carry directly over ocean rocks to a compact green, bunkered left and backed by water. With strong Atlantic winds and tight landing, it's an unforgettable test of nerve and accuracy for any golfer.

Clubhouse

No items found.

Simple clubhouse with locker rooms and small pro shop. Basic snacks and drinks available, but minimal food service. Comfortable seating with panoramic views of the crater and ocean, plus a lounge area for guests and members.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Modest driving range, small putting green, and basic short game area near the clubhouse. Golfers can expect limited space and facilities that focus mainly on putting and short wedge work rather than full swing practice.
