Course Report

Flocks of Scottish black face sheep roam Whistling Straits, including the Irish Course, adding to its links-like atmosphere and enhancing the course’s character.

About

The Irish Course at Whistling Straits, designed by Pete Dye and opened in 2000, is a links-inspired inland course set amid dunes, moguls, and sculpted bunkering. Located adjacent to the world-famous Straits course, it blends Dye's strategic vision with rugged Wisconsin beauty. The course consistently challenges golfers with its windy conditions and creative design.

Caddie Tip

Play for position off the tee—length is less important than avoiding deep fescue and fairway bunkers. The winds off Lake Michigan are often swirling and unpredictable, so club selection can change dramatically throughout the round. On the greens, most putts tend to break more than they appear; trust your read and stroke.

The Main Challenge

The Irish Course’s greatest challenge is negotiating the unpredictable wind, dramatic elevation changes, and multitude of strategically placed pot bunkers. Poor tee shots are harshly punished by the thick fescue rough and deep hazards. Many greens are elevated and contoured, demanding precise approaches and deft putting.

The Good

Golfers rave about the Irish Course's creative design, natural terrain, and the sense of playing a true links-style layout far from the sea. The rolling landforms, rugged bunkers, and windswept feel make each round different. Its proximity to Lake Michigan ensures ever-changing conditions and makes for an exciting, scenic experience.

The Not So Good

Some players note slow pace of play during peak times due to high demand and challenge level. The punitive nature of forced carries, plentiful bunkers, and thick rough can frustrate higher-handicap golfers. More on-course restrooms and additional water stations would further improve the player experience.
