Course Report

The course originally started as a 9-hole layout designed by Len Biles in 1916 before Donald Ross completed the full 18 and made notable renovations, blending classic design with Cape Cod scenery.

About

Wianno Club, designed by Len Biles and later remodeled by Donald Ross, is a classic 18-hole private club perched on a bluff overlooking Nantucket Sound in Osterville, Massachusetts. The course is renowned for its strategic play, historic character, and picturesque Cape Cod setting. Bentgrass greens and fairways offer a quality playing surface from spring to late fall.

Caddie Tip

Manage your club selection carefully as the course is often influenced by breezes from Nantucket Sound. Approach shots demand precision to small, undulating bentgrass greens. Keep the ball below the hole when possible, as uphill putts are much safer and chipping from above the cup can be treacherous. Play strategically to avoid Ross's clever bunkering.

The Main Challenge

Wianno’s greatest challenge lies in its small, Donald Ross-designed greens that put a premium on accuracy and short game skill. Wind sweeping in from Nantucket Sound can make club selection tricky. The course requires strategic play, especially around the greens guarded by deep bunkers and subtle contours.

The Good

Golfers love the historic charm and classic Cape Cod setting—rolling terrain, ocean breezes, mature trees, and well-placed bunkers combine for a memorable experience. The course’s manageable length paired with strategic shot values and picturesque backdrops makes it a highlight for its members and guests.

The Not So Good

Some members and guests note that conditioning can occasionally be affected by the Cape’s fluctuating weather. A few wish for more consistent fairway turf and expanded practice areas, as well as enhanced short game facilities. Others point to the smaller green complexes as a challenge, though this adds to the charm.
