Course Report
Holes 4 and 8 share a large, double green—a feature rarely found outside classic British Isles courses and a nod to Robert Trent Jones's affection for distinctive design elements.
About
Cacapon Resort State Park Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72 parkland course designed by the famed Robert Trent Jones Sr. Nestled in the wooded mountains of West Virginia, the layout features rolling fairways, undulating greens, and beautiful vistas. The course delivers a memorable and fair challenge for players of all abilities, complemented by an inviting lodge and full-service practice facilities.
Caddie Tip
Pay close attention to the elevation changes and prevailing winds on the par 3 holes, especially the double green at 4 and 8. Tee shots that land short will tend to roll back off the putting surface, so aim for the heart of the green, and favor the uphill side when possible. The greens tend to roll true but can be deceptively quick downhill.
The Main Challenge
The toughest part of the layout is negotiating the undulating terrain and well-protected greens, especially when approaching pins set near bunkers or slopes. Several longer par 4s require well-placed drives to avoid tree lines. The double green on 4 and 8 can present putting challenges, especially when fast.
The Good
Golfers love the Robert Trent Jones Sr. architecture, which blends seamlessly into the surrounding mountains and woodlands. The natural beauty, strategic bunkering, and variety of holes make repeat rounds interesting. The relaxed atmosphere and quality facilities, including a well-run lodge and attentive staff, are consistent favorites among visitors.
The Not So Good
Some players express concern over green speed inconsistencies during peak summer months and would like to see improved drainage after heavy rains. There are occasional remarks about certain tee boxes and bunkers needing more frequent maintenance, especially late in the season.
Signature Hole:
#
4
The 4th hole is a memorable par 3 that shares a unique double green with hole 8. Playing about 110 yards, it requires accuracy to avoid facing a tough recovery if you miss the green. Bunkers and elevation changes add to the challenge, and the striking backdrop makes this one of the most photographed holes at Cacapon.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse offers a well-stocked pro shop, comfortable dining options for breakfast and lunch, modern locker rooms, and friendly staff. The adjacent resort lodge adds extra convenience for overnight guests and includes spa, dining, and recreation amenities, enhancing the visitor experience.
Practice Facilities
The practice area includes a full-length driving range, chipping green, and a large putting green. Lessons and clinics are available from a PGA professional. There is also a golf academy on-site, making it an excellent place for both serious practice and casual warm-up before a round.
