Course Report

Cariari Country Club was the only championship layout in Central America for nearly two decades and occupies land that was formerly a large coffee plantation.

About

Cariari Country Club, designed by George Fazio and constructed by Tom Fazio, is Costa Rica’s first 18-hole championship course. Set on a former coffee plantation in Heredia, this private parkland layout features tree-lined, rolling fairways, challenging water crossings, and is recognized for its strategic design and lush Central Valley scenery.

Caddie Tip

Due to the narrow, tree-lined fairways and frequent water hazards, conservative tee shots and careful club selection are rewarded. Pay close attention to green complexes that slope subtly and read approach angles carefully—local knowledge from a caddie can save multiple strokes per round.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge at Cariari is its tight, tree-lined fairways, which demand accuracy and punish errant shots. Water hazards cross several holes, and clever green complexes require thoughtful approach play. Wind is rarely severe, but the tropical setting can create soft turf conditions.

The Good

Golfers love the lush, mature tree canopy, challenging fairway corridors, and Costa Rica’s scenic Central Valley mountain backdrop. Members praise the tranquil, private setting and the traditional parkland design, elevated by attentive hospitality and quality greens.

The Not So Good

Some golfers would like to see further investment in practice amenities and regular bunker maintenance. During the rainy season, occasional wet fairways and slower play can be a concern. Accessibility for visiting golfers is also limited due to membership restrictions.

Signature Hole:

#

18

No items found.

The par-4 18th hole is a 355-yard dogleg right that features a sloping fairway descending toward a river 30 yards short of a green protected by sand traps. Accuracy from the tee and strategy approaching the well-guarded green are critical, making this finishing hole a memorable challenge.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features upscale locker rooms, a pro shop, full-service restaurant, pool, event spaces, and fitness facilities. Members enjoy social and dining events all year, with attentive staff and an elegant, welcoming environment.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Cariari offers a driving range and dedicated short game area, plus putting greens for pre-round warmup. Practice facilities are functional but not expansive, and some local golfers wish for additional modern training infrastructure.
