Course Report

Green Mountain National Golf Course has been voted the #1 public course in Vermont by Golf Digest and Golfweek, and it sits just minutes from the famed Killington Ski Resort.

About

Green Mountain National Golf Course, designed by Steve Durkee and opened in 1997, is nestled in Vermont’s Green Mountains. Renowned as Vermont’s #1 public course, it features bentgrass greens, fairways, and tees, offering challenging play for all golfers with a tranquil and scenic mountain setting.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy off the tee is critical due to the tree-lined fairways and elevation changes. Pay close attention to club selection on the signature 16th, as the downhill par 3 is exposed to gusty winds. Aim for the center of greens and avoid missing long, where recovery is often difficult. Play smart on approach shots to maximize scoring chances.

The Main Challenge

The course’s greatest challenges are the elevation changes and frequently tight, tree-lined fairways, requiring strategy and club control. Greens are subtly contoured and can be quick, demanding thoughtful approach shots. Expect to use every club in the bag and plan carefully for blind shots and prevailing winds.

The Good

Golfers rave about the secluded, peaceful mountain setting and the variety of holes, especially the dramatic elevation changes and scenic par 3s. The friendly staff, excellent playing conditions, and the ‘private club’ atmosphere of this public course enhance the experience, making it a favorite for Vermont and New England visitors.

The Not So Good

Some players note that pace of play can occasionally slow on weekends or during peak summer, and that the natural mountain terrain means occasional challenging lies and uneven stances. A few wish for expanded food and beverage options at the turn and more yardage markers to speed up pace for first-time guests.

Signature Hole:

#

16

Hole 16, a par 3, is the standout at Green Mountain National. Tee shots launch from an elevated tee through a chute of trees to a green surrounded by natural forest and hazards, demanding both accuracy and nerve. The captivating mountain backdrop provides one of the course’s most memorable vistas.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The welcoming clubhouse features a pro shop with apparel and equipment, a casual grill for food and drinks, and comfortable seating. While not ornate, it is clean and functional, and the outdoor patio overlooks the course, making it a pleasant spot to relax pre- or post-round.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Green Mountain National offers a full driving range with grass tees, a large short game area, and a putting green, providing ample opportunity to warm up and practice. The range is well maintained and ideal for warming up before a round or improving your game.
