Course Report

The course is known as Virginia’s premier public golf and craft beer destination and was recognized by Golf Digest as one of the nation’s Top 10 Best Remodels.

About

Independence Golf Club, designed by Tom Fazio with involvement from Lester George and Tom Marzolf, is a public 18-hole, par-72 course just west of Richmond. Known for its Champion Bermuda greens and manicured parkland setting, the layout offers challenge and variety for all golfers. Renovations have further improved playability, and the facility features excellent practice and clubhouse amenities.

Caddie Tip

Take a conservative approach off the tee—landing areas tighten at several doglegs, and missing the fairway often leads to thick rough. Approach shots demand precise distance control because of sloped green complexes. The finishing stretch requires focus and smart club selection; being below the hole rewards easier putts as greens can be slick.

The Main Challenge

The toughest stretch of Independence Golf Club is its final holes, which demand accuracy off the tee and resilience into sloping green complexes. Deep rough frames the fairways and punishes errant shots, while water hazards and bunkers are strategically placed to challenge even accomplished players.

The Good

Golfers praise Independence Golf Club’s modern design and high-quality course conditions, emphasizing the Champion Bermuda greens that roll true and fast. The overall atmosphere is friendly, and the off-course amenities—such as the expansive practice grounds, grill, and event space—add to the overall experience, making it a standout among public options in Virginia.

The Not So Good

Some reviews note that weekend pace of play can be slow, particularly during busy times. There have also been complaints about higher greens fees and additional practice facility costs. The on-course service at the grill and in the clubhouse has received criticism for inconsistency during peak periods.
