Course Report

A tree removal program in the 2000s restored spectacular mountain views and returned greens to their original Ross dimensions.

About

Lake Sunapee Country Club is a classic 18-hole Donald Ross design, established in 1928. Known for its rolling fairways, mountain views, and walkable layout, the course blends strategic bunkering and challenging greens. A significant restoration by Ron Forse revived its original Ross character and added scenic vistas, making it a regional gem with strong architectural pedigree.

Caddie Tip

Pay close attention to approach angles and green contours, as Donald Ross’s subtle design puts an emphasis on accuracy and thoughtful strategy. Many greens slope away or have false fronts, making it wise to play for the center and avoid short-siding yourself.

The Main Challenge

The course places a premium on approach shots, with undulating Donald Ross greens demanding precise distance control. Well-placed bunkers and deceptive slopes make recovery difficult, while holes routed over rolling terrain call for thoughtful club selection and careful management of sidehill lies to avoid the thick native rough.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the classic Ross layout, which offers exceptional strategic variety and shot values. The mountain scenery and recently restored tree-lined vistas create a memorable setting, and the course’s playable routing makes it enjoyable for walkers. The greens, especially after renovation, provide a true and fast surface, loved by regulars.

The Not So Good

Some players note the tightness of several landing areas and wish for slightly wider fairways, especially in high-traffic corridors. Bunker renovation and improved tee box leveling have also been mentioned as points for future enhancement to bring consistency to the overall experience.
