Course Report

Old American Golf Club has hosted the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic, making it one of a select few public Texas courses to host a major professional women’s event.

About

Old American Golf Club is an acclaimed public course on Lake Lewisville in The Colony, Texas, designed by Tripp Davis and PGA Tour winner Justin Leonard. Opened in 2010, it pays homage to the Golden Age of golf architecture with native grasses, strategic bunkers, and lakeside views, earning recognition as one of Texas' finest public layouts.

Caddie Tip

Be mindful of the wind, especially as you approach the back nine along Lake Lewisville. Aim for the safest landing areas, as many fairways narrow between native grasses and bunkers. On approach shots, take time reading greens—many slope subtly toward the lake and can be deceptively quick on downhill putts.

The Main Challenge

The prevailing winds off Lake Lewisville add constant unpredictability, especially on the inward holes. Narrow fairways, strategic bunkering, and small, often well-protected greens demand precise play and course management. The layout forces players to make tough choices off the tee and when approaching greens that can be tough to hold.

The Good

Golfers rave about the memorable stretch of holes along Lake Lewisville, particularly for their beauty and challenge. The course’s historic presentation, variety, and evocative layout—combined with strategic bunkering—offer an experience that lets players imagine golf’s golden era while battling Texas winds and modern hazards.

The Not So Good

Golfers frequently critique the basic clubhouse amenities, such as the lack of dedicated locker rooms and limited space for comfort or changing. Some regulars also remark on inconsistent maintenance during busy periods and wish for more robust investment in overall course infrastructure and member experience.

Signature Hole:

#

14

No items found.

The signature hole at Old American is the par 5 14th, a demanding double dogleg that runs into the prevailing wind along Lake Lewisville. With a serpentine fairway, menacing bunkers, and water looming left, it’s a true three-shotter for most and tests precise placement across each layup. The visuals and challenge make it unforgettable.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse offers a pro shop, grill, and relaxed woodframe lounge for dining, with scenic views over the course. While bathrooms are available, there are no on-site locker rooms—the nearest are shared with The Tribute. The facility maintains a welcoming, historic ambiance, ideal for post-round meals or small gatherings.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Old American features a full driving range, short game area with practice bunkers, and a large putting green. Facilities are suitable for warm-up and casual practice, though they are not extensive compared to premier destination resorts. Instruction and clinics are often available, with on-site staff assisting golfers of all levels.
