Course Report
Old Silo was Graham Marsh's first design in the United States and quickly earned acclaim as one of Kentucky's top courses after opening.
About
Old Silo Golf Club in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, is an 18-hole public course designed by the renowned Graham Marsh in 2000. The course, set amid rolling hills and open farmland, features a creative mix of open and tree-lined holes, subtle elevation changes, and expansive bentgrass greens. Once ranked among Kentucky's best daily-fee facilities, it became a destination for both locals and traveling golfers.
Caddie Tip
Stay below the hole on approach shots; the large, undulating bentgrass greens can be fast, especially downhill. Watch for changing winds on the open holes and play safe sides away from water hazards, which come into play on several holes, particularly on the back nine.
The Main Challenge
The back nine ramps up the difficulty with well-placed water hazards and challenging green complexes. The undulating terrain places a premium on approach shot positioning, especially on several elevated greens protected by bunkers or natural slopes.
The Good
Golfers regularly raved about the exciting design and excellent greens, appreciating the picturesque rural setting and the strategic variety throughout the layout. The combination of challenging holes and beautiful countryside views made it a Kentucky must-play during its heyday.
The Not So Good
The most frequent complaints centered on inconsistent course conditioning in later years and some drainage issues after heavy rains. Golfers also wished for more clubhouse amenities and clearer yardage markers for improved navigation.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The par-4 18th plays as a dramatic finishing hole from an elevated tee, demanding a strong drive down a gently curving fairway with water hazards guarding the approach. Strategic bunkering and views of the countryside make it a memorable challenge to close out the round.
Clubhouse
Facilities included a golf shop, snack bar, and outdoor patio for post-round relaxation. Although modest in size, golfers found the amenities functional and well-suited for most daily-fee visitors.
Practice Facilities
A full driving range and short game area gave players the chance to warm up properly, while a putting green adjacent to the clubhouse helped sharpen touch before the round.
