Course Report

Owl’s Nest is ranked #6 worldwide for value among Nicklaus Design courses by NBC Golf Pass, out of over 400 Nicklaus layouts globally.

About

Owl’s Nest Resort & Golf Club is a scenic public course set in the White Mountain National Forest, designed by Mark Mungeam. It features 18 holes divided into three unique six-hole sections, showcasing elevation changes, mountain views, and strategic layout. The course is renowned for its blend of mountain, links-style, and water-protected holes, providing both challenge and beauty for golfers of all levels.

Caddie Tip

Play for position on the front nine’s links-style holes, taking advantage of perimeter mounding to avoid trouble. On the back, adapt club selection to the dramatic elevation changes, aiming for safe targets and being mindful of swirling mountain winds that can impact approach shots and putts.

The Main Challenge

The most challenging aspect of the course is the dramatic elevation changes on the back nine, particularly atop Sunset Hill. These holes require skilled club selection and precise shot execution. Water hazards on the mid-section penalize errant shots, while swirling winds and undulating greens consistently test patience and accuracy.

The Good

Golfers rave about the breathtaking White Mountain views found on many holes, especially the finishing stretch, and the overall diversity of the course layout. The blend of three distinct six-hole sections—links-style, water-protected, and dramatic mountain shots—offers a uniquely memorable round.

The Not So Good

Players occasionally note conditioning inconsistencies, particularly during the spring thaw or after heavy rains. Some critiqued the unevenness of rough and bunkers and wished for quicker play at peak times. Updates to certain course infrastructure would also improve the overall experience.
