Course Report

About
Pound Ridge Golf Club is Pete Dye’s first and only golf course design in New York, offering a modern championship layout across 172 acres of dramatic cliffs, streams, and hardwood forest. Opened in 2008, the course features bentgrass throughout and contoured fairways, providing golfers a visually stunning and demanding challenge.
Caddie Tip
Pay close attention to the dramatic elevation changes, especially on approaches. Many greens slope subtly away from the player, so favor conservative targets and focus on judging yardages over rough terrain. Play smart around rock features and avoid being aggressive off downhill tees.
The Main Challenge
Pound Ridge’s toughest test comes from its natural terrain and Dye’s use of intimidating rock features, forced carries, and penal fescue rough. Accuracy off the tee and strategic approaches are vital, especially with deceptive green surrounds and water hazards in play on numerous holes.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the thrilling visuals and challenge of the dramatic rock outcroppings, elevated tees with panoramic views, and the strategic variety infused by Pete Dye’s architectural creativity. The course offers memorable holes and a distinct, world-class experience uncommon for public facilities.
The Not So Good
The most common critique relates to the premium greens fee; many players feel access could be broadened during peak months. Some mention the severity of Dye’s penal design features occasionally slows pace or increases lost balls for higher handicaps.
Signature Hole:
#
15
Hole 15, 'Headstone,' is a par 3 requiring a forced carry across a marsh. A dramatic mass of rock sits behind the long green, making distance control crucial; overshooting the green rebounds balls into water, creating a high-stakes, visually memorable test for golfers.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse includes a pro shop, locker rooms, lounges, and a snack bar/cafe. Amenities are clean and well-managed but relatively understated compared to luxury clubs. Golfers experience welcoming staff and efficient check-in procedures.
Practice Facilities
Pound Ridge offers a full driving range, putting green, and short game area with high-quality turf. Instruction is available and club rentals are offered. Practice facilities are modern but no covered range stalls.
