Course Report

Shinnecock Hills was one of the five founding members of the USGA and was the first American club to build a dedicated clubhouse, designed by McKim, Mead & White in 1892. It also allowed women members from its founding in 1891.

About

Shinnecock is links golf in an American accent. The fairways are wide but deceptive, inviting you to swing freely, then punishing the wrong angle into its small, tilted greens. Native fescue frames every hole, and the wind off the Atlantic means no two rounds ever feel the same. The 11th, with its elevated green exposed to the breeze, can turn a wedge into a guessing game. What makes Shinnecock special is how natural it feels—the land was meant for golf, and you sense that with every shot.

Caddie Tip

Always factor in the coastal winds—they are constant and often stronger than they appear. On the approach, favor the safe side of the greens, as many run off sharply. The back nine can be brutal if you miss fairways or put your ball above the hole, so plan conservatively, especially coming home.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge is handling the relentless wind off the Atlantic and navigating thick, native fescues that line tight fairways. The fast, firm greens refuse to hold imperfect shots, and strategic bunkering punishes errant approaches. Precision off the tee and deft touch around the greens are vital to scoring.

The Good

Most golfers rave about the routing and undefeated natural landscape at Shinnecock Hills. The firm, undulating fairways, world-class green complexes, and stunning views over coastal Long Island combine for a walk with golf history—and a stern, fair test that rewards bold and precise play.

The Not So Good

Given Shinnecock’s pedigree, some members and elite players sometimes cite the rough as overly punishing during tournament setups, causing pace-of-play concerns. Visitors also note its exclusive, old-school atmosphere can feel unwelcoming to non-members, and spectator logistics are challenging during major events.

Signature Hole:

#

11

The par-3 11th is considered Shinnecock Hills’ signature hole, playing over a natural valley to a narrow, perched green protected by fierce bunkers. Its exposed location and prevailing winds from the Atlantic make club selection and distance control a premium, demanding focus and precision for even seasoned golfers.

Clubhouse

Members enjoy a historic clubhouse with lounges, dining rooms, and locker facilities. The clubhouse, designed in 1892, features views over the course and a classic, understated décor. Amenities include full-service dining, private event spaces, a golf shop, and attentive staff.
