The club's grand opening in 1947 featured a match with golf legends Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen, marking one of Bobby Jones' final public rounds.
About
The Patterson Club is a private 18-hole parkland course in Fairfield, Connecticut, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1947. Renovated by Rees Jones in 2010, it stretches to nearly 6,800 yards and features strategic bunkering, man-made lakes, and well-groomed bentgrass playing surfaces. With a rich history, the club offers a classic, challenging New England golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively off the tee, as many holes feature strategic bunkering and subtly dogleg fairways. Approach shots demand attention to pin location, with greens sloping deceptively and water hazards often lurking near landing zones. Prioritize accuracy over distance for the best scoring chances.
The Main Challenge
The Patterson Club’s greatest challenge lies in its strategic bunkering, water hazards, and subtly contoured greens. Tree-lined fairways demand accuracy from the tee, and several holes require careful club selection and thoughtful course management. The combination of length, hazards, and smallish greens ensures even experienced players are tested.
The Good
Golfers praise the course’s classic design, challenging layout, and superb greens, noting its peaceful environment and natural beauty. The mix of open and tree-lined holes, combined with water features and quality bunkering, provides a memorable, enjoyable round that appeals to both low and high handicappers.
The Not So Good
Some members and guests have noted that drainage can be an issue after heavy rains, and the rough is sometimes penal, leading to slow play. Additional updates to the clubhouse amenities and more flexible guest policies are occasional requests for improvement.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th is a par 4 finishing hole that plays toward the stately clubhouse, framed by mature trees and well-placed bunkers. This hole demands an accurate tee shot and a precise approach to a well-guarded green, testing golfers under pressure and providing a picturesque end to the round.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse offers dining, bar and snack facilities, locker rooms, a pro shop, and an outdoor pool. The modernized clubhouse, rebuilt in 2010, provides elegant event spaces and panoramic golf course views. Members enjoy attentive service, social events, and a welcoming atmosphere in a comfortable setting.
