Course Report
The course occupies over 265 acres of Indiana University campus land and features design input from two-time major champion Fuzzy Zoeller.
About
Designed by Steve Smyers and two-time major champion Fuzzy Zoeller, The Pfau Course at Indiana University is a modern par-71 layout stretching up to 7,908 yards. Set among Bloomington’s rolling hills and mature hardwoods, it’s recognized for challenging championship players and remaining approachable for casual golfers, offering six sets of tees for all skill levels.
Caddie Tip
Play conservatively off the tee to navigate the rolling terrain and avoid the plentiful, strategically placed bunkers. Pay close attention to approach shots, as green complexes are undulating and heavily guarded. Course management is key, especially in windy conditions common to the site.
The Main Challenge
The greatest challenge comes from the length and strategic bunkering, with many holes framed by dramatic fairway movement, thick rough, and sloping greens. Playing from the tips demands long, accurate drives and committed approaches, especially when Bloomington’s shifting winds add another layer of complexity.
The Good
Golfers appreciate the natural, rolling Indiana landscape and the course’s flexibility, with six tees allowing all skill levels to tackle a memorable modern design that captures the natural terrain. The top-quality greens and fairway conditions, along with striking views, make for a rewarding golf experience.
The Not So Good
Some players note the course can be punishing for those not on their game, with challenging rough and frequent deep bunkers. The length from the back tees and undulating greens can lead to high scores for mid- and high-handicap players and slow pace-of-play when crowded.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th is a par 4 that closes the round in dramatic style, demanding a well-placed tee shot between bunkers and strategic hazards. The approach plays towards a green flanked by natural contours and deep bunkering, making par a strong finish for any golfer.
Clubhouse
The modern clubhouse offers a pro shop with the latest gear and apparel, locker rooms, and casual dining options. There’s ample event space for groups, indoor seating with course views, and attentive staff create a welcoming environment.
Practice Facilities
Excellent practice facilities include a full driving range, multiple putting and chipping greens, and a dedicated short-game area. Golfers of all skill levels can make use of the expansive space for warming up or focused instruction before a round.
