Course Report

Inspired by the playground game H-O-R-S-E, golfers decide teeing areas and hole sequence as they play, giving each round a new twist.

About

The Prairie Club Horse Course in Nebraska’s sandhills is a unique 10-hole short course designed by Gil Hanse and Geoff Shackelford. With no fixed tees, total yardage can range from 485 to 1,125 yards. Players select their own teeing areas, encouraging creativity and short game skills. The rolling fescue and bentgrass greens are paired with sweeping sandhill views.

Caddie Tip

Embrace creativity—think beyond conventional tee boxes. Study surrounding contours before chipping or putting, as slopes are deceptive. Adjust for variable wind conditions, and use your imagination with shot selection. Always communicate with your group about hole sequence to maximize enjoyment.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge comes from the undulating greens and exposed location, where gusty sandhill winds can play havoc with short approach shots. The absence of set tee boxes demands strong short game skills and sharp course management, as every round may require different tactics.

The Good

Golfers love the imaginative format and social, relaxed atmosphere—every round feels different. The short course design emphasizes creativity and camaraderie, making it a favorite for groups and post-round unwinding. The dramatic sandhill setting and undulating greens offer a fun, approachable challenge for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Some visitors wish for more defined hole markers or teeing guidance, as the freeform layout can be unfamiliar to newcomers. On busy days, play can slow as groups debate teeing locations and shot order, so clearer signage and simple hole-starting aids would enhance pace and clarity.
