Course Report
The course was originally named Devil's Pulpit and was created by the inventors of Trivial Pursuit. It once hosted the inaugural Telus Skins Game, with icons like Freddie Couples and Jack Nicklaus competing.
About
The Pulpit Course at The Pulpit Club, designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, is a celebrated private club north of Toronto. Known for its dramatic elevation changes, breathtaking opening hole, and unique features like three 11th holes, the course blends classic parkland aesthetics with modern design. Routinely ranked among Canada’s top 25, The Pulpit offers a stern yet playable challenge on a landscape of rolling Caledon Hills, framed by pure natural beauty.
Caddie Tip
The biggest challenge is reading the greens, as many break more than expected toward Lake Ontario visible in the distance. Approach shots tend to play shorter due to elevation changes. Play for the safe side, especially on par 4s, as strategic bunkering and tricky runoffs make aggressive lines risky for first-timers.
The Main Challenge
The Pulpit Course is defined by its bold elevation changes, strategic bunkering, multi-tiered greens, and long par 4s. Players face frequent carries, sloped lies, and unpredictable wind patterns. The first hole sets the tone, demanding precision off the tee and bold decision-making, while the closing stretch tests shotmaking under pressure.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the course’s dramatic terrain and skyline views, especially from the elevated 1st tee. The variety of holes, creative routing, and the natural beauty of the Caledon Hills make every round memorable. Fans love the thoughtful integration of the landscape and the way the layout challenges skilled players without overwhelming higher handicaps.
The Not So Good
Some players comment that the dramatic elevation changes, while visually stunning, can make walking the course physically demanding. The quirky layout featuring three 11th holes may occasionally confuse newcomers, and in wet weather, drainage in lower areas can present temporary issues. Access is limited due to strict private membership.
Signature Hole:
#
1
The signature hole is the par 4 1st, called “Tower,” playing 478 yards from an elevated tee. The drive requires a bold carry over 200 yards, dropping nearly 50 feet to a contoured fairway, with panoramic Toronto skyline views in the distance. It’s considered by many as one of the world’s most spectacular opening holes due to its visual drama and architectural challenge.
Clubhouse
Members enjoy two unique clubhouses with extensive locker rooms, dining options, lounge spaces, pro shops, and private event areas. Amenities include a fitness center, seasonal hiking trails, fishing ponds, winter skating, and tobogganing, providing a full year of activities beyond golf.
Practice Facilities
The Pulpit Club features expansive practice ranges and short game areas, including target greens, chipping zones, and bunkers. Each of the two courses has its own dedicated practice facility, offering both grass and mat teeing grounds, as well as putting greens and on-site instruction.
