Course Report

Sergio Garcia, who assisted Greg Norman with the design, went on to win the Valero Texas Open at the AT&T Oaks course in 2011.

About

TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks) is a resort course northeast of downtown San Antonio, designed by Greg Norman with Sergio Garcia consulting. Opened in 2010, it's renowned for its challenging layout, dramatic elevation changes, and cavernous bunkers. The Oaks Course serves as the annual home of the PGA TOUR’s Valero Texas Open and is part of the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort.

Caddie Tip

Approach shots require maximum attention: the large, undulating greens and severe bunkering punish short-siding misses. Aim for the center of greens whenever in doubt. The back nine often plays into the prevailing wind and the course’s closing stretch, especially 16–18, can be punishing with tough carries and demanding approach angles. Plan your round to save stamina and focus for these holes.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge comes from the complex green sites and deep bunkering, which forces accurate second shots and creative recovery play throughout the round. Several holes, especially on the inward nine, require forced carries over natural hazards and strong course management to avoid the course’s penal rough and tricky putting surfaces.

The Good

Golfers rave about the sheer challenge and variety of the layout: each hole stands on its own with testing green complexes, dramatic limestone outcroppings, and the beautiful oak-lined setting of the Texas Hill Country. Hosting a PGA TOUR event, the course provides a chance for guests to walk in the footsteps of the world’s best, all in impeccable conditioning.

The Not So Good

Players most often cite the course’s difficult walkability and long distances between greens and tees as a downside. Wind can be severe and the tough green complexes can sometimes be penal for higher handicappers. The course also restricts public play to resort guests, which limits access and raises green fees, especially at peak times.

Signature Hole:

#

18

No items found.

The 18th hole is a 591-yard par 5 that demands precision to finish out the round. The tee shot must avoid fairway bunkers, then a long approach or layup requires accuracy with a creek crossing before reaching a green guarded by deep bunkers. The closing challenge is renowned for deciding professional tournaments.

Clubhouse

No items found.

Golfers enjoy access to an expansive and modern clubhouse featuring locker rooms, a well-stocked pro shop, multiple dining options including a bar and grill, as well as panoramic views of the property. The nearby JW Marriott offers spa services, pools, and a variety of restaurants, making it a full-service resort destination.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

The facility offers state-of-the-art practice facilities, including a spacious double-sided driving range with target greens, large putting and short game greens, and bunkers replicating course conditions. Range balls and access to practice areas are included with most-day green fees. Instruction and clinics are regularly available.
