Course Report
Triggs Memorial was built on the historic 140-acre Obadiah Brown Farm and is one of the few Donald Ross-designed courses in Rhode Island still operating as a public facility.
About
Triggs Memorial Golf Course, designed by famed architect Donald Ross and opened in 1932, is a classic 18-hole municipal course in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Providence. Ross’s hallmark routing utilizes rolling topography and strategic bunkering. Popular with locals, it’s regarded as one of the best municipal layouts in New England.
Caddie Tip
Play to the center of the greens—Triggs’ Donald Ross design features several elevated, sloping, and well-bunkered greens that can be tough to hold from poor angles. Accuracy off the tee is vital on the tree-lined back nine, which tends to play firmer and faster as the season progresses.
The Main Challenge
Maintaining control coming into the greens is the course’s biggest challenge—many putting surfaces are elevated and slope back-to-front, penalizing short-sided misses and demanding careful approach play. Strategic bunkering and dense trees make driving accuracy essential, particularly on the demanding back nine.
The Good
Golfers love the authentic Donald Ross design, especially the variety and strategy on the routing. The challenging greens, restored bunkers, and classic New England setting make Triggs one of the region’s most enjoyable and playable munis, providing a memorable experience for both locals and visitors.
The Not So Good
Common feedback centers on crowded tee sheets, especially during weekends and peak times. Some golfers have requested further improvements to certain tees and bunkers, as well as additional tree management to open up angles and improve turf conditions on shaded sections.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole at Triggs Memorial is a par 4 finishing hole that requires a demanding and accurate tee shot to avoid fairway bunkers, setting up an approach to a slightly elevated green protected by bunkers. The closing stretch offers a dramatic end with the clubhouse as the backdrop.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features a pro shop with essential gear and merchandise, locker rooms, and a grill room offering food and drinks. Space for post-round gatherings is available, and the staff is known for friendly, welcoming service.
Practice Facilities
Triggs offers a driving range, a practice green, and short game area for chipping and putting. These facilities are functional but basic, providing enough space for a solid warm-up before your round. They’re well maintained and suitable for most public golfers.
