Course Report

The Ocean Course’s signature 16th hole is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful par 3s in the Caribbean and often features sand iguanas sunning in the seaside rough.

About

Designed by Tom and George Fazio, the Ocean Course offers a classic 18-hole layout set between the Atlantic Ocean and El Yunque Mountains at the Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Resort. Opened in 1975, it features elevated greens, palm-lined fairways, coastal winds, strategic bunkering, and scenic views, making it one of Puerto Rico’s most well-loved and picturesque resort courses.

Caddie Tip

Wind dramatically affects club selection, especially on seaside holes like the 16th. Bring extra balls for the water carries, aim for the center of greens when unsure, and use local knowledge to play for runouts on the paspalum fairways. Course management and discipline are key to scoring well, particularly when the coastal breezes are up.

The Main Challenge

The toughest part of the layout comes on the exposed seaside holes, where shifting coastal winds—especially on the 15th through 18th—can turn straightforward holes into formidable challenges. Water hazards and deep bunkers penalize errant shots, particularly on the signature stretch of 16, 17, and 18.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the Ocean Course’s sweeping Atlantic Ocean vistas, particularly on the closing stretch and the iconic 16th hole. Many visitors love the variety in shotmaking required by the inland and coastal holes, as well as the challenge from shifting sea breezes and the tranquility offered by lush tropical landscaping.

The Not So Good

Players frequently mention that excessive rain can affect playability and course conditions, especially in the wetter summer months. Some visitors wish for faster greens and note that at peak resort occupancy, rounds can be slow due to tourist traffic. Cart-path-only rules after heavy rain also slow down play.
