Course Report
The course borders Lake Winnipesaukee and offers rare panoramic lake and mountain panoramas not found at many New England clubs.
About
Bald Peak Colony Club in Melvin Village, New Hampshire, is a private Donald Ross design dating to 1921. Set along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee with mountain views, the 18-hole course features classic Ross styling and subtle greens. The club is highly exclusive with a historic, tranquil setting and recent restoration work by Ron Forse & Jim Nagle.
Caddie Tip
Many Ross greens at Bald Peak are subtle but tricky—play to the fat of the greens, because running through can leave tough recoveries. Pay close attention to approach angles, as run-offs and collection areas penalize errant shots around the greens.
The Main Challenge
Bald Peak’s difficulty centers on its slick, contoured greens and the need to control approach angles. Errant tee shots can find tree lines or rough, but real challenge is in the subtle breaks and slopes on Ross’s small, elevated greens, demanding confident putting and short game play.
The Good
Golfers rave about Bald Peak’s peaceful lakeside setting, the quiet, member-focused atmosphere, and the classic yet playable Ross layout. The combination of mountain and lake scenery paired with smart, enjoyable routing is cited as uniquely relaxing and memorable for all skill levels.
The Not So Good
Amenities are traditional rather than deluxe, and pace of play can lag behind on busy weekends. Some members wish for expanded practice facilities and even more sympathetic course restoration to further recapture its Ross character.
