Course Report

The South Course is built on the grounds of two former 1920s-era courses and was completely redesigned after Hurricane Katrina.

About

Bayou Oaks at City Park (South Course) is a modern 18-hole layout in the heart of New Orleans, designed by Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead and reopened in 2017. The par-72, 7,302-yard course features wide fairways, strategic bunkers, and water hazards. It’s built to challenge all levels of skill and is the city’s premier public golf experience with a contemporary clubhouse.

Caddie Tip

Favor the generous landing areas off the tee, but don’t be lulled into complacency—positioning is key for attacking bunker-protected greens. Pay special attention to approach shots on holes with water hazards, especially on the back nine.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge comes from the large and strategically placed bunkers along with frequent water hazards that test both course management and shotmaking on multiple holes. The course rewards players who can shape shots and control ball flight, especially with variable winds.

The Good

Golfers love the strategic layout and the forgiving fairways that give way to genuinely interesting approach shots. Many enjoy the pace, city park ambiance, and the accessibility coupled with high quality conditioning, making it a favorite for both locals and traveling golfers.

The Not So Good

Players sometimes note that the course can become waterlogged after heavy rain, impacting playability due to the naturally soft ground. Some also wish for even more lush landscaping and faster greens to match top private clubs, though conditions have improved since opening.
